Last Sunday (04.08) I participated in the special summer edition of the Dunckerclub's traditional Dark Market. The Gothic Design and Flea Market has been taking place since a long time (I'm not sure but I guess since 2008)! And takes place approximately quarterly.
The Dunckerclub is located in the heart of Prenzlauer Berg, in the district of Pankow and since the 1960's has been associated with proponents of East Germany's diverse counterculture including bohemians, state-independent artists, and the LGBTQ+ community. It was an important site for the peaceful revolution that brought down the Berlin Wall in 1989. Prenzlauer Berg is known for being multicultural and youthful, and where young families settle down to enjoy one of Berlin's most diverse districts.
The club is one of the oldest locations in Berlin, having been around for over 30 years. It is focused on independent and alternative rock music. An exception to this is the Dark Monday, where the visitors can enjoy the best from Dark Wave, EBM, Gothic, Deathrock, Industry, Neofolk, Post Punk, Synthwave and so on.
The current Dunckerclub was built in 1913/14 based on a design by Ludwig Hoffmann, a German architect and was one of the most famous architects of Berlin. He designed for example the Altes Stadthaus, the Märkisches Museum, the museum of Berlin and the Mark Brandenburg. With Alfred Messel, he designed the built version of the Pergamon Museum. He was also responsible for the Märchenbrunnen (fountain of fairy tales) of the Volkspark Friedrichshain, the first public park in Berlin and my favorite park here!
The club's building hosted from 1983 to 1989 a GDR (German Democratic Republic - the official name for East Germany) youth club. At the time, it was one of the few Berlin establishments that dared to hold punk concerts outside the prescribed GDR culture.
The Dark Market offers 1st & 2nd hand sale of Gothic clothing, recordings, books, art, jewelry, mead, etc. It takes place inside the club with a good selection of goth music, or at the club's entrance or even in the summer garden.
I had been to the market before as a customer and there I met a very lovely exhibitor who gave me tips about the exhibition and since then I was very motivated to participate. Maybe my stand was too pink but I was happy to see how many people liked it even because of its excess of kawaii :D
I would like to thank Daisy and all the people who came to visit the stand, it was a really cool experience!
And finally, the outfit I wore:
