Bambi's Lullaby: Schöneweider Nachbarschaftsflohmarkt

Set along the banks of the Spree river, the historic Hasselwerder Villa provided a warm and welcoming backdrop for the Schöneweide Flea Market (Schöneweider Nachbarschaftsflohmarkt), which took place on last April 26th, 2025.

An den Ufern der Spree gelegen, bot die historische Hasselwerder Villa am 26. April 2025 eine warme und einladende Kulisse für den Schöneweider Nachbarschaftsflohmarkt.

Schöneweide, meaning "beautiful meadow" formed in the 17th century two small villages along the banks of the Spree, called Ober- and Niederschöneweide.

Schöneweide entstand im 17. Jahrhundert mit zwei kleinen Dörfern entlang der Ufer der Spree, die Ober- und Niederschöneweide genannt werden

Oberschöneweide is characterized by its historical industrial heritage, with many old industrial sites undergoing redevelopment. Due to the current presence of several universities, such as the HTW campus, there is a strong student community there. I lived there for two years near the HTW, and visiting Schöneweide brings back many good memories.

Oberschöneweide ist geprägt von seinem historischen Industrieerbe, wobei viele alte Industrieanlagen derzeit saniert werden. Aufgrund der heutigen Präsenz mehrerer Hochschulen, wie dem HTW-Campus, gibt es dort eine starke Studentengemeinschaft. Ich habe dort zwei Jahre in der Nähe der HTW gelebt, und ein Besuch in Schöneweide weckt viele schöne Erinnerungen bei mir.

In this context, the Hasselwerder Villa was then built around 1907 for the couple Richard and Elsbeth Lehmann. After the expropriation of the Lehmanns in 1942, the villa initially became a health office under the National Socialists and, after the Second World War, served mainly as a district command of the National People’s Army until around 1989. From 2006 to 2014, the villa was partially vacant, and its outdoor areas — which had been renovated in 2001 as a public park — remained largely unused.

In diesem Zusammenhang wurde die Hasselwerder Villa um 1907 für das Ehepaar Richard und Elsbeth Lehmann erbaut. Nach der Enteignung der Lehmanns im Jahr 1942 wurde die Villa zunächst unter den Nationalsozialisten als Gesundheitsamt genutzt und diente nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg hauptsächlich als Bezirkskommando der Nationalen Volksarmee bis etwa 1989. Von 2006 bis 2014 stand die Villa teilweise leer, und ihre Außenanlagen – die 2001 als öffentlicher Park renoviert worden waren – blieben weitgehend ungenutzt.

At this site, the NOVILLA project by the Moving Poets community comes to life, inspiring and energizing the cultural scene in Berlin’s southeast. This project aims to manage the Hasselwerder Villa in Berlin-Schöneweide as an international center for art, creativity, and exchange.

An diesem Standort erwacht das NOVILLA-Projekt der Moving Poets Community zum Leben und belebt die Kulturszene im Südosten Berlins mit Inspiration und Energie. Dieses Projekt hat zum Ziel, die Hasselwerder Villa in Berlin-Schöneweide als internationales Zentrum für Kunst, Kreativität und Austausch zu betreiben.

Moving Poets is an international community of artists and creative professionals of different disciplines, cultures and age groups. The Moving Poets community was founded in the USA in 1996 as a professional, non-profit arts organization. Today they are based here in Berlin and in Charlotte (USA).

Moving Poets ist eine internationale Gemeinschaft von Künstler*innen und Kreativschaffenden unterschiedlicher Disziplinen, Kulturen und Altersgruppen. Die Moving Poets Community wurde 1996 in den USA als professionelle, gemeinnützige Künstlerorganisation gegründet. Heute hat sie ihren Sitz hier in Berlin und in Charlotte (USA).

Participating in small neighborhood flea markets is always very enjoyable and a great opportunity to meet many friendly people! The sunny day helped inspire good spirits among the visitors, but it was still quite cold for me, and since we stayed in the shade, I couldn’t take off my coat.

Die Teilnahme an kleinen Flohmärkten im Viertel macht immer viel Spaß und ist eine tolle Gelegenheit, viele freundliche Menschen kennenzulernen! Der sonnige Tag trug dazu bei, die Besucher in gute Stimmung zu versetzen, aber für mich war es noch ziemlich kalt, und da wir im Schatten standen, konnte ich meinen Mantel nicht ausziehen.

I visited this market last year and was so enchanted by the atmosphere that I decided to take part again this year.

Ich habe diesen Markt letztes Jahr besucht und war so begeistert von der Atmosphäre, dass ich mich entschied, dieses Jahr wieder teilzunehmen.

For this occasion, I wore the Drop Lace Rococo Accessories Print JSK II by Baby, the Stars Shine Bright for the first time. It's a 2008 print which I acquired at our community's last swap meeting and that I immediately fell in love with when I saw it. However, I didn’t like how the sleeves fit me (I’m usually not a big fan of one-pieces), so I decided to modify it into a jumperskirt.

Zu diesem Anlass trug ich zum ersten Mal das Drop Lace Rococo Accessories Print JSK II von Baby, the Stars Shine Bright. Es handelt sich um einen Print aus dem Jahr 2008, den ich beim letzten Swap-Meeting unserer Community erworben habe und in den ich mich sofort verliebt habe, als ich ihn sah. Allerdings gefiel mir nicht, wie die Ärmel an mir saßen (normalerweise bin ich kein großer Fan von Einteilern), deshalb entschied ich mich, ihn in einen Jumperskirt umzuwandeln.

Wer wollte, konnte einen Kuchen fürs NOVILLA-Projekt mitbringen. Ich hab einen Stracciatella-Kuchen gebackt – natürlich mit viel Liebe!

A very clever and creative girl had her own stand, and I bought a few things from her, a keychain and a bookmark that she made herself!

Ein sehr kluges und kreatives Mädchen hatte ihren eigenen Stand, und ich habe ein paar Sachen bei ihr gekauft. Einen Schlüsselanhänger und ein Lesezeichen, die sie selbst gemacht hat!
